Hello,
This morning we had a fire drill and the students did a wonderful job. They exited the building quickly and quietly, setting a great example for the younger students.
Before the drill, we did some silent reading and discussed the homework questions from last night. We had a great talk about how the pizza question asked how many pizzas I could make with 80 pepperoni pieces, rather than how many pizzas would I have to make to have a single pizza with 80 pepperoni pieces. Ask your kids to explain the difference and how the problem is solved, at the dinner table tonight. Hopefully it will start an interesting discussion.
Today, we also explored patterns and graphing. The students are asked to complete the two sequences from class, with t-tables, graphs, equations and words. Finally, they will find the 200th term for both of the sequences using the general pattern rule.
Tomorrow, we will look at some responses students gave to questions from the Digging for Gold text they read last week. Our goal is to make sure we are always explaining our thinking and including examples from the text to prove our points. I look forward to a great discussion tomorrow, which will lead to greater understanding and detail in their responses.
One last challenge. Please answer this patterning question:
If Mr. Skinner had 70 trick or treaters at his house in 2008, 80 trick or treaters in 2009 and 90 trick or treaters in 2010, how many trick or treaters will he have at his house this year?
Have a great evening.
Mr. Skinner
