Angle Scavenger Hunt

Hello,

Today we had some fun in Math class. We spent some time talking about acute, right, obtuse, straight and reflex angles and the steps for measuring them using a protractor. Then we went out on a scavenger hunt, looking for different angles in the school, taking pictures of them with our iPads and classifying and measuring the angkes. We came back to class and shared our findings with other groups in the class. We will wrap up our discussion tomorrow, and correct the angle sheet that was for homework last night.

In Language, we made revisions to our 67's and Cake Raffle announcements with a partner, and read the announcements to the other students who created similar announcements. From the 67's group, Carter was selected to read his announcement today. Ethan will read his announcement tomorrow, Samantha will share her announcement on Monday and Alex and Anthony will be reading their announcements together on Tuesday. Everyone made very good changes today, to make their writing more interesting and energetic.

We will select the readers for the Cake raffle announcements next week. Don't forget that there is still time to buy tickets for the 67's raffle. Tickets are on sale until Tuesday.

Finally, don't forget to complete your jobs for tomorrow's literature circle. Your group members are counting on you. Please remember to bring your novels and all necessary materials to school tomorrow morning.

For my three volunteers for the first round of article summaries, if you feel that you need more time to improve your work, after discussing our example summary and response to the questions yesterday, please let me know tomorrow and I will give you until Monday. However, I will not mention this in class, so you will only know about this option if you have read the blog!

Lockdown Practice

Hello,

This morning we had a lockdown practice and the students did a fantastic job. Everyone took the exercise very seriously and did exactly what they are supposed to do.

We also started to examine angles and different ways to describe the characteristics of shapes. Don't forget to finish your math worksheet for homework tonight. In Language, we looked at examples for our article summaries. Please remember to have your job for the literature circle completed for Friday.

Finishing our projects

Hello,

Today, most of the groups from the two classes finished their surveys and graphing projects. I look forward to displaying your great work in the hallways of the school. If you did not complete your work, please finish it at home tonight, or at school, during recess, tomorrow.

The students who finished their projects had a chance to read their novel and work on their literature circle jobs. Some students also started to work on the newspaper article assignment that I passed out on Monday. Each week, three students will be asked to select an article, summarize the main points, answer questions about the article and present it to the class,

Finally, I noticed that the blog's page views spiked last night. I hope you enjoyed watching the different commercials the students filmed. Tomorrow, we will be watching the videos in class and offering feedback about what we liked, and possible improvements that could have been made.

Thanks to the early bird students who brought in money for the 67's raffle today. Raffle tickets will be sold all week. I bought mine already. Good luck to everyone!

Posting our Posters

Today we did some self and peer editing of our posters, after creating a poster as a class for the 67's raffle.

Once we were satisfied with our finished products, we began to decorate the walls of the school with our posters for the raffle.

Have you ever wanted to watch a hockey game at Canadian Tire Centre in a box suite? Well, here is

your chance!

The students of Holy Redeemer have the opportunity to win tickets to cheer on the 67’s from a box suite this Family Day!

The 67’s are facing the Owen Sound Attack that afternoon. The family of a Grade 6 student has generously donated the use of their box suite for the game. The winner of the draw will receive 10 tickets for the box suite located in section 113B. Two parking passes will also be provided. The tickets are for Monday, February 17, 2014 at 2 p.m.

Starting Tuesday, January 28^th, students will have an opportunity to buy raffle tickets, for the chance to win this amazing prize.

Students can buy 1 raffle ticket for $2.00, 3 raffle tickets for $5.00 or 7 tickets for $10. The raffle tickets will be sold in Mr. Skinner’s classroom at 11:30 (the start of lunch recess) each day.

The ticket raffle will be raising money for the Grade 6 end of the year trip to the Y Camp in June.

The draw will be held on Tuesday, February 4, 2014.

During second block, the students worked with their partners on their surveys and graphing projects. Each group is expected to have their survey and three graphs displayed on a large piece of construction paper that we have provided. On Tuesday, the students will be given one more block to work on the project. They will be expected to hand in their completed work on Tuesday.

Our First Literature Circle

Hello,

Today was a very successful day, as everyone completed their Fair Trade chocolate commercials (I will post the links later this weekend) and we had our first literature circle.

All of the students were enthusiastic and participated very well in the discussions with their groups. It was a great start. A reminder to make sure that your work is completed on time for next Friday's literature circle. Most students were ready, but a few had to scramble to finish and this has a negative effect on the quality of your group's discussions. Please remember your assigned reading and your role for next week and do your best to make sure you are prepared to participate. Give your best effort and you will get so much out of this experience.

We had a good start, but I believe the coming weeks can be even better.

Buddy Day!

Hello,

I was away this morning at a workshop, but upon my return, the supply teacher told me that the class was very productive.

Today was a Buddy Day for the students at our school, as they were treated to a presentation from Mrs. Koss, the youth group coordinator at Holy Redeemer Church. Then, they had the opportunity to make cards for Mrs. Maxwell to celebrate her retirement at the end of the month. The school would like to present her with a memory book, so that she can know what a big difference she made in the lives of so many children. If your family would like to add to the book, please send your cards and letters to the school by Tuesday, January 28, 2014.

Also this morning, the students had the opportunity to finish up overdue work (the advertising posters, announcements and the Math Centres), get started on their jobs for tomorrow's Literature Circles, and continue to work on their Math surveys and graphing projects with their partners.

Working on Surveys and Deciding on Jobs

Hello,

This morning we started the day with some review of mean, median, mode and range. The we explored converting fractions to percentages. The students were given a worksheet that featured all of these concepts, which is to be completed tonight.

The students used the final 20 minutes of the block to complete a variety of tasks. Some finished up their advertising posters and announcements, some worked on their story summaries for Three Monks, No Water, while other continued to work on their math worksheet, to ensure that they would not have it for homework.

During second block, we continued our work on the Graphing and Survey project with the other Grade 6 class. The students made great progress, with many of the pairs beginning to ask students their survey questions. To wrap up the block, the students selected their job for this week's literature circle on Friday. Most students have finished their assigned reading for this week, and they can spend tonight and Thursday working on their role for this week.

Each student has one job to complete, with some students in smaller groups having two jobs from the following list: Discussion Director, Literary Luminary, Connector, Word Wizard and Illustrator/Mapper.
