Looking at Newspapers

Hello,

Today, we went over our Math test as a class and discussed various questions. The students will get their final mark tomorrow and will be asked to get the test signed on Tuesday night. I am sure that everyone will be glad to share their results with their parents, as the students performed very well on this task.

We also got together with our table groups to discuss the homework questions on rate, going over any difficult or challenging questions as a group.

Next, we finished up our charts and Venn diagrams, which compared newspaper articles and interviews, highlighting their similarities and differences, after reading an example of each.

Some students also started to work on a newspaper article scavenger hunt, where they were asked to find examples of various types of articles online. Everyone will be completing this task in the coming days.

I also collected all of the finished EQAO prep Trail Blazer packages. If any students did not complete this work it needs to be completed tonight and hand in tomorrow morning.

Have a good night.

Calculating Rate

Hello,

This morning we worked on calculating rates for Math. We had some great discussions, as the students could see many real world applications for this skill, such as calculating the best price for apples or doughnuts, when comparing rates at two different stores. We completed some questions in class and will continue to work on this task tomorrow. The students also received a homework sheet that is due on Monday.

In Language, we began to examine newspaper articles, as we compared interviews and articles, looking for the similarities and differences. There is no Language homework tonight, but a reminder that the EQAO reading prep activity is due on Monday.

Finally, the students shared their great work on the sacraments. The presentations were interesting and informative and the feedback provided to the students after each video was insightful, as each group was offered quality suggestions by their peers about how they could improve their work. Click on the links to see some great work.

Excellent work!

Hello,

This morning, the students did an excellent job on their Geometry test. I have been able to evaluate most of the tests, and the students displayed a high level of understanding. A few students were sick today, so I will hand out the marked tests by the end of the week, when all of the tests have been completed and evaluated.

After finishing their tests, the students continued to work on their entrepreneurship project, planning out posters, letters and instructional videos for the day. They are working very hard and continue to make great progress.

We didn't have an opportunity to watch the sacrament videos today, so we will watch them on Thursday and then I will post them.

Both Grade 6 classes also handed out a sample EQAO reading activity that will need to be completed at home and handed in by Monday. Thanks.

Have a good night.

Sharing our Thoughts and Answers

Hello,

Today, during first block we went to the learning commons to return our books, then we corrected our algebra questions from last night and discussed our answers in our table groups, to help prepare for the Math test on Wednesday.

Then, the students completed their sacrament project. We will watch them tomorrow and post them on the blog. When groups completed their sacrament project, the students worked in pairs on an inquiry Math question, then they began to explore the differences between newspaper articles and interviews. We will be working on newspaper articles in the coming weeks.

Have a wonderful evening.

Exploring the Sacraments

Hello,

This morning the students continued to work on their research presentations about the sacraments of the church. Working in groups of two or three, the students have created presentations explaining one of the seven sacraments of the church. Our goal is to complete our work on Tuesday and watch the presentations later in the week.

Today, we also had the opportunity to watch our animoto presentations, which were based on the themes of justice. The efforts of the various groups were very creative, and our work will only get better as we get more comfortable working with this program for future presentations.

Justice - group 1
Justice -group 2
Justice - group 3
Justice - group 4
Justice - group 5

Finally, we continued to work on algebra questions that involved solving for variables. The students are asked to complete at least five questions in each of the three columns on the first side of the sheet, and five or more of the problem solving questions on the back of the sheet.

These questions are for homework and will serve as great practice for the test we will be having on this material on Wednesday.

Have a good night.

We Have a Winner

Hello,

Thanks to everyone for voting. Our project, which will take place on May 1, 2014, will be called "Helping the Hungry: By Our Sandwiches We Show Our Faith".

We continued to work on this project today and things are really taking shape. It's great to see the students taking responsibility and working together so well.

This morning, we also took out new books from the learning commons and corrected the algebra worksheet. The students did a great job on the worksheet and most had all of the work completed, we were able to have some great discussions at our tables about our responses.

Tomorrow is a very exciting day, as we are heading to Holy Trinity for our Transition Day activities. Please remember to dress appropriately for the weather, as we might be walking back in a bit of a snowstorm in the afternoon.

Have a good night.

We Need a Name

Hello,

I hope everyone had a wonderful March Break. I had a great time hanging out with Stella. Everything was wonderful until I spent Saturday night in Montreal at a certain hockey game. Actually, I would rather not talk about it, thanks for understanding.

Today, we looked at algebraic expressions and solving questions with symbols or letters as variables that represent unknown quantities. Most students completed the first side of the sheet in class. The back of the sheet is for homework tonight.

Next, we worked in our groups on our sandwich making entrepreneurship project. Things are starting to come together and the groups are working really well. There's just one problem. We need a name for our project.

All students need to have their voice heard. Please vote tonight (one vote per student).

Vote for the project name.

May the best name win. Have a good night.

Ash Wednesday

Hello,

Yesterday, some students started the day with pancakes, as we looked forward to the beginning of Lent. We also watched our book trailers and gave some oral feedback to each group.

We also started the process of making our own websites. The students created their own site, using Blogger or Google Sites, and made their first blog post. Everyone is welcome to work on their sites at home, especially over the March Break! Our goal is to have the students post regularly on the blog and post some of their assignments on the site as well, so it can be used as an e-portfolio.

This morning, we had an Ash Wednesday celebration, then we completed a Math quiz on Order of Operations. Next, we worked on our sandwich making entrepreneurship project, as we made plans to adjust our focus a little bit, thanks to a certain record breaking group from Dallas. We made some wonderful progress.

Tomorrow, we will have our final presentations of the newspaper article summaries. A reminder to anyone who has not yet presented, you will be expected to share your work on Thursday morning. Also, please remember to return your permission slip for the transition day trip to Holy Trinity.

Finally, please remember to bring board games tomorrow, as the Grade 6 students will be working on their collaboration and problem solving skills, through board games, once our other tasks are completed in the morning. I will challenge anyone to a game of Connect Four - if anyone brings the game!

Have a great night.

BINGO!

Hello,

Today, we had some great games of Bedmas Bingo, as the students used their knowledge of Order of Operations to solve problems and win prizes. Congratulations to all of the winners of the 67's tickets and the chocolates.

We also worked on decorating our "Alleluia" banners in preparation for Lent. I hope everyone who placed their orders enjoys their pancakes on Tuesday (as well as their pizza - what a great day)!

Today, we also put the finishing touches on our Justice presentations using Animoto, and we sharpened our language skills, while contributing to a good cause on freerice.com.

Please remember to return your French pathways form for Holy Trinity and the permission slip for our trip to Holy Trinity as soon as possible.

Have a great night.
